Change has been a constant in Sarah Phenix’s life.
“My family has moved every two years or less for most of my whole life — mostly within the state of Texas,” she explained.
Sarah mainly sees the moving (due to the nature of her father’s job) as having had a positive impact on her life.
“We were homeschooled, so it wasn’t all that bad in that regard,” she said. “I feel like it made us really tight as a family.”
During Sarah’s senior year in high school she began to have debilitating migraines. At the same time she was also struggling to decide what was next for her life after graduation.
“(I asked) ‘Okay, God, What are you trying to tell me here? What am I supposed to do?’” she explained. “I felt extremely trapped where I felt that there was no good place for me to go. I felt like there were lots of options that I could choose — I could go to school or work, but none of it felt like God. It just compounded things.”
About that time Sarah and her family moved to the Keller/ Fort Worth area of Texas. Her father’s co-worker suggested she check out The King’s University.
“We came and visited, and as we were walking around I just had this incredible peace,” she exclaimed.
Sarah is now in her second year at TKU in the Associate of Worship Leadership (AWL) degree program.
“I’ve been stretched and have grown, learning about God and community,” she exclaimed. “I’m generally a shy person—introverted, so it’s been really wonderful to be surrounded by a community that’s really safe. You can share your stories with other people and you know they’re going to encourage you.”
This time the future after graduation doesn’t loom over Sarah’s head in such an imposing way.
“My goal is to finish my degree and see where it will take me,” she said. “I feel God is trying to teach me to trust Him. I’m trusting God will tell me what to do when it’s time to do it.”
