Big changes are coming to The King’s University’s undergraduate programs—changes designed to enhance your academic experience, streamline your degree path, and give you more flexibility to customize your education. Whether you’re a current student or considering joining the TKU community, these updates will offer new opportunities for academic growth, career preparation, and ministry training.
Listen to this exciting update from our Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Linda Hoover and Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Jesse Buchholz.
A More Efficient and Flexible Degree Structure
Beginning in Fall 2025, all King’s undergraduate degrees will transition to a 120-credit structure, aligning with Texas state standards. This change makes it easier for students to navigate their academic journey, transfer credits, and complete their degrees on time. Our goal is to provide a streamlined experience while maintaining the depth and rigor that define a TKU education.
What’s New?
We’ve reimagined our undergraduate programs to better serve your calling and career aspirations. Here’s what you can expect:
1. A New General Education Core
A strong general education foundation is essential for academic and spiritual growth. TKU’s new general education requirements are aligned with Texas state standards, ensuring a well-rounded curriculum that enhances critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills—all within a Christ-centered framework. These foundational courses will equip students with the knowledge and values needed to excel in their chosen fields.
2. A Refined Major Core Curriculum
Your major courses are now more focused and streamlined, allowing you to gain deeper knowledge in your field while keeping your degree path efficient. By optimizing the curriculum, we have reduced redundancy and increased the impact of key courses, ensuring that students receive the most relevant and high-quality education possible.
3. More Flexibility with Concentrations & Minors
Do you have a passion for multiple disciplines? Now, you can personalize your degree by adding a concentration within your major or selecting a minor in another field of study. This flexibility allows you to explore diverse interests, develop additional skill sets, and tailor your education to your specific career goals.
For example:
- A Bachelor of Arts Ministry Leadership major can add a concentration in Pastoral Ministry.
- A Bachelor of Arts Biblical and Theological Studies major can minor in Biblical Counseling to expand their ministry capabilities.
- A Bachelor of Science Biblical Counseling major can choose a concentration in Preprofessional Counseling to help advance their education towards Texas state licensure.
The possibilities are endless, giving students a truly customizable academic experience.
Who Benefits from These Changes?
Whether you’re a new student starting in Fall 2025 or a current student considering a transition, these program enhancements are designed with you in mind. The streamlined curriculum will help students complete their degrees more efficiently while providing more opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and career-focused specializations.
Should You Move to the New Catalog?
If you’re a continuing student, you might be wondering: Should I switch to this new program structure?
The answer depends on your progress in your current degree plan. Some students may find that the new curriculum helps them graduate sooner by reducing excess credit hours, while others may prefer to stay on their current track to maximize their existing coursework.
That’s why we strongly encourage students to compare their current catalog with the new structure and consider the following factors:
- Time to Graduation – Will switching allow you to graduate sooner or delay your completion?
- Course Adjustments – Are there courses in the new program that better align with your academic and career goals?
- New Opportunities – Would a new minor or concentration enhance your educational experience?
